Club News : Flyer’s Midnight Madness Marathon and Relay
Posted by rohan on 2012/4/18 15:20:00 (46 reads)

This is a fundraiser to assist club member Martin Fryer to race in the Unix 6 day race in Hungary from May 9th-May 15th where he will be attempting to top the world rankings for the event.

Why?

To raise funds to assist Martin Fryer to compete in the Unix 6 day race. All the profit from the event will assist Martin with competition costs. If you can’t compete you can make a donation online and go into the guessing competition to estimate the distance Martin will cover in 6 days. All competitors are also entitled to enter the guessing competition. The prize is a trophy constructed from gear that Martin uses in the race.

What?

An off-road, night time, trail marathon consisting of fire trails and single track at the iconic Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra on a lapped course and A relay race for teams of 2 to 7 people on the above course. A unique experience!

When?

Saturday the 28th of April 2012

Start 7:00pm

Cut off time: Midnight (strictly enforced)

Where?

Stromlo Forest Park Canberra

Who?

The event is being hosted by Weston Creek Athletics club – the same crew that run the Weston Creek Half Marathon.

Further information

The marathon event is only suitable for experienced runners who have appropriate experience and training to complete the distance (42.2km) on a challenging course at night with minimal support. If you are unsure whether you are suitably fit to attempt the marathon we encourage you to enter as part of a relay team, alternatively you could contact Vince Craig on 0432 832 431 or vince.craig@anu.edu.au to discuss your preparedness for the event.

The course is entirely contained within Stromlo Forest Park Canberra and is off road in that the majority of the course is on fire trails and a significant section of the course is on mountain bike single track trails (not steep). We think this is a great and enjoyable course. The course consists of a loop of ~6km. Relay runners must complete a full lap and can then change over. For example a relay team of two could change over at the end of every 6km lap. A map of the course will be posted a few days before the event.

We will be enforcing a strict cut off time. You MUST finish by midnight. We will be stopping runners heading out on another lap well before midnight if we believe you will not be able to finish before midnight. Please understand that this is necessary for the organisation of the event.

The event will only provide minimum support (think fata$s style + a bit more help). We think this is part of the attraction of the event.

To spell it out:

There may not be any marshals out on the course

The course will be well marked, but you need to be confident in your ability to follow the course markings at night.

You should make sure you have appropriate clothing considering that it could be very cold and may be wet.

You need to be confident in running over trails at night.

Refreshments will be provided at the start/finish area – every 6km.

You MUST carry a torch or a headtorch and we advise that you carry spare batteries. No torch, no start!

Prior to the race all entrants will be notified of arrangements to follow should you become ill or injured out on the course.

Please send this email on to all your running friends!
