Course Details

The date of this iconic Weston Creek Half Marathon is determined to allow sufficient time to recover if you are running the Canberra marathon in April. A 10Km Community Fun Run event was introduced in 2018 to extend those who only frequent Park Runs.

It is an undulating and challenging course, all run on bike paths, with no road crossovers, thus it is a safe and extremely scenic course with views over Lake Burley Griffin for most of it.  Usually, balloons are launched at Black Mountain Peninsula in the morning morning and participants have a great view of balloons overhead as they start racing.

Electronic timing is used for the event, which allows the results to be accessible on your phone immediately after you complete the race.

Engraved Canberra Redbacks medals and prizes are awarded to the outright winners of both events, with awards also in the half marathon for age group winners. The male and female winners of the half marathon get to take the perpetual trophy home for 12 months when they will have their names engraved on it.  They also each receive an engraved ‘keepsake’ trophy.  There are some very famous names engraved on those male and female perpetual trophies. Ours is one of the few events where the medals are engraved.

There are also lots of lucky draw prizes to go around with much thanks to our loyal event sponsors. Food, drinks and fruit are also available after the race.

Water at the two drink stations is in small bottles to minimise Covid risk.

The course starts at the end of Garryowen Drive on Black Mountain Peninsula. Runners will proceed along Garryowen Drive and turn left onto the shared path just before Lady Denman Drive. Runners then proceed along the shared path, (keeping to the left hand side) around West Basin and over Scrivener dam, where a few hundred metres after the dam the 10k course turns around. The Half Course continues along the shared paths past the ovals at Curtin, under McCulloch Street and adjacent to Yarra Glen. The shared path then crosses under Melrose Drive and passes the pitch n putt in Woden. Shortly after runners turn and retrace their steps to Black Mountain Peninsula. Here they turn right onto the bike path near the rowing sheds and enter John Cardiff Close for the finish.

There are two drink stations on the course, which are visited twice, once out and once back, situated at the 4km and 8 km mark, and there will be a lead bike for both events.
